Retail Clothing Chain's Update of EDI Capabilities
A GIS/Sterling Integrator Success Story
THE COMPANY:
Multi-Billion Dollar Retail Clothing Chain in need of updated EDI
integration capabilities to meet the needs of new technologies and
standards, communicating with SAP as well as mainframe applications.
THE CHALLENGE :
- Replace two legacy EDI systems (Gentran for UNIX and Gentran for
Windows) currently processing EDI for multiple mainframe backend
systems with Sterling Commerce’s Gentran Integration Suite (GIS)/Sterling Integrator.
- Integrate GIS/Sterling Integrator with several new SAP instances in addition to
remaining mainframe applications.
- Determine inbound document routing by manipulating data within
each document during processing.
- Collect and format transaction data from each document processed
in order to be received by a custom SAP IDOC used to track all
transactions performed within GIS/Sterling Integrator and SAP.
THE SOLUTION:
- Architected a core process allowing for simplified modification
of backend targets (additional back end targets can be added quickly
with minimal effort).
- Created an any to any relationship processing capability (any
transaction can be received by any back end system, regardless of
platform).
- Developed processes to collect appropriate data points during
processing, writing to an XML format to be translated to a custom
IDOC for tracking purposes.
THE RESULTS:
- Any-to-Any relationship between transactions and back end
systems, streamlining change process.
- Flexibility to add or remove back end target systems.
- Robust error trapping and subsequent reporting throughout the
entire business process cycle.
